Building your new home can be very exciting & give you loads of experience. This involves a lot of planning; you could start off own preparation even before the site plans etc are chosen:

Planning your Budget: Affordability is a key factor; you need to know your limits, your capacity to make payments to your lender, builder etc. Do your research and determine the loans available in the market, do your budgeting before hand.

Choose your builder/contractors: compare different builder/contractors to what they have to offer, talk to people who have had their homes build with them, try to go for a reputable builder/contractors as you are going to have a piece of mind with the end result & quality of your home.

Study the plan & contract signed with your builder/contractor. Use qualified professional or lawyers to negotiate with your builder/contractor as this can be usually tricky and tough to understand.

Getting the cost estimates: try getting the estimates from the different sub contractors and compare them, shopping around will always save you a lot of money.

Permits & restrictions: be aware about the regulations etc set by your local council, knowing the restrictions etc before having an approved plan with your builder can save you a lot of time.
